political consumerism

political consumerism
As society becomes increasingly consumptioncentred, so the power of the consumer replaces other forms of political power. Boycotts of companies, products of particular countries and individual products represent a successful strategy of protest, causing financial damage and adverse publicity. Campaigning groups such as Third World First advocate avoidance of firms trading unethically in developing countries, and boycotts centred on environmentalism (often grouped under the banner of green consumerism), animal rights and human rights abuses, employment conditions and other ethical issues are a common feature of contemporary life. By shopping ethically and politically, consumers believe they can put significant pressure on the economies of nations and the profits of corporations, and thus effect change.
